Detents are small ball or pin mechanisms loaded by a spring — they engage into recesses or notches on adjacent components to hold them in specific indexed positions. On the MTW, detents and their springs are used to retain the selector lever in its fire/safe positions, hold take-down and pivot pins against loss during field stripping, and secure other internal components against movement under recoil. When a detent spring weakens or breaks, the affected component loses its positive retention — selectors feel loose or slip out of position, pins are no longer retained, or internal parts migrate.
